YOUR JOURNEY AT A GLANCE

  1. 01Follow-up plan
  2. 02Discharge records
  3. 03Fitness to travel
  4. 04Support at home

Planning treatment abroad should include what happens after you leave hospital and after you arrive home.

Before travelling, establish how your treating team will review your progress, what records you will receive and which arrangements may be needed in the UK.

Having these conversations early gives you time to organise support.

Agree a follow-up plan before treatment

Ask who will be responsible for reviewing your recovery and how those reviews will take place.

Confirm which appointments are included in your package, whether remote consultations are available and what would require you to attend in person.

You should also know whom to contact between appointments. The UK government’s medical tourism checklist recommends checking whether aftercare in the UK can be provided through the NHS or needs to be arranged privately. Read the planning checklist.

Prepare for discharge

Ask the hospital what information it will provide when you leave.

A useful discharge pack may include:

  • A summary of your diagnosis and treatment
  • Procedure details and relevant results
  • Implant or device information, where applicable
  • Your current medicines and instructions
  • Care instructions and activity guidance
  • Follow-up dates and treating-team contact details

Ask for explanations of anything you do not understand. Keep the documents available for any clinician involved in your subsequent care.

Confirm when you can travel

Discharge and fitness to fly are separate decisions.

Your treating specialist should advise when you can travel, and the airline may require advance medical confirmation. Air travel after major surgery can increase the risk of a blood clot, so return-flight timing needs individual clinical advice. See the UK government’s guidance on treatment abroad and returning home.

Before booking, ask what happens if you need more time in India. Confirm how accommodation and transport could be extended and how any additional charges would be handled.

Organise practical support at home

Think through your arrival and the following days.

Who will collect you? Will you need help with meals, shopping, stairs or household tasks? Are there appointments, equipment or professional services to arrange before returning?

Base these arrangements on the guidance given by your treating team. Recovery needs differ between procedures and individuals.

Make medicines and appointments clear

Before leaving the hospital, confirm the medicines supplied, how long they should last and who will review them.

If you may need further prescriptions or care in the UK, discuss this with the relevant provider in advance. Do not assume an overseas prescription or treatment plan will automatically be continued unchanged.

Keep a written record of appointment dates, contact details and any questions you want to raise.

Know how to respond to concerns

Ask the treating team to explain which changes need prompt attention and how to obtain help.

A coordinator can assist with communication and arrangements, but urgent medical concerns require clinical assessment. Do not wait for a remote appointment or coordinator’s reply if you need urgent local care.
